I had a gift card for Amazon and was surprised at how few beach scoops showed up in the search given that Amazon seems to sell for everyone nowadays. That aside, I knew RTG was a trustworthy name from some of the metal detecting forums. The description of the Buccaneer scoop on Amazon provided minimal information, so I had to hunt through the manufacturer's site to find a better description. From the manufacturer: This sand scoop's sifting basket is 5" in diameter. Strong 1/2" wire welded screen is brazed to the bucket. The handle is 14" long & brazed to the bucket at a 20° pull angle. This angle makes it easy to dig in sand. A soft rubber hand grip is placed at the end of the handle for comfort. A great scoop to use in both wet and dry sand. Easy to use and lightweight. Made in the U.S.A. Knowing that it would work well in WET sand and not crush the wire mesh screen was important information for me. When I received the scoop, I wasted no time putting it to use. I've used it on sand volleyball courts, beaches, and in fresh and salt water. Here are the pros and cons. PROS: -- Sturdy construction from what appears to be 16 gauge galvanized steel (there was nothing to clearly indicate this, but I do know it is NOT aluminum and does not appear to be stainless steel). I have found I can dig confidently with this scoop applying as much downward force as I would with a shovel. The welds are strong, the lip of the scoop does not waver under force, and the 20 degree angle makes scooping toward me all the more easier. -- Large 5" mouth just the right size for "engulfing" a target area -- Wire mesh screen allows quick sifting of dry and wet sand but is tight enough to hold onto small jewelry/coin targets -- 14" handle (2 inches longer than some) seems to provide the perfect balance between compact enough to "grab and go" yet long enough to provide leverage for scooping without breaking your back to do it. -- Affordable CONS: -- Scoop came painted in a metallic silver paint that quickly was worn away by abrasive sand. Mine may have been freshly made as the paint even adhered to my hand a little when holding the shaft. As this is an aesthetic issue, I don't really care. After all, I'm digging in dirt. But why paint it in the first place? -- The rubber handle slipped a little on the shaft and I had to push it back on. This was after HEAVY usage and has not diminished the scoop's utility. -- It's not aluminum so it's a little heavier than some scoops, but it's also stronger. The 14" shaft and the use of mesh rather than punched holes helps to offset weight discrepancies when compared to other scoops. -- It's not stainless steel, so it requires care, but it's also a heck of a lot cheaper than stainless steel scoops. I do rinse it and towel dry it after using it in water, particularly salt water. May not be necessary, but it's always a good idea to take care of the tools you value most. SUMMARY: I love this scoop and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good, solid beach/sand scoop that can dig hard and handle wet and dry sand. The construction quality of this scoop sets it apart from other scoops. There are no weak connection points (screw joints, pressure pins, funky bent connection angles), only a strong weld from the shaft to the bucket. And the thick wire mesh basket works wonderfully at sifting sand on land or in water.
